About The Artwork
Great Rising is a term a dear friend sends to me from time to time. It fit this work so well. It is the dawn, all is quiet, the world is waking. A ray of light arcs the sky like a rocket. Hope for a new day. I don’t paint, but instead I invite nature to rust a piece of steel into blacks and whites. The ray is white gold leaf, which stays untouched by the rust. It shines through despite the caustic chemicals and rises almost completely intact. Around it black rust and white patina blend and fight for space, as I heat the mixtures to intensify the reactions and involve more of the steel. It is a conversation, and sometimes a battle, with nature and its elements since I work outside and with oxidation processes. I have only limited control. And yet the story of the Great Rising is told, by patterns and movements under nature’s command, not mine. Telling and showing her very own story of the dawn.

I've been an artist of one form or another all my life. I am drawn to weathered wood and metal, exploring their contrast with gold and other metal leaf. I find fascination and beauty in natural processes of aging, the rusting of metals into vibrant colors and the complex textures seen in old, reclaimed woods. My work explores the innate art in these expressions of natural impermanence, often contrasted with the enduring permanence of gold. I believe that art can speak to the heart and to the senses in ways beyond words.
