About The Artwork

This painting is the fourth in the Atavisms quartet and also a prominent part of the Library-of-Congress-Subject-Headings series. Its title represents the LC-prescribed shelf-mark for “collective behavior.” The only prismatic object in the otherwise sfumato composition of greys is a bunch of bananas, clasped in the lemur-like hands of a crouching, guarded simian. A blind form with a powerful nose is sneaking up behind him, on to the presence of bona fide goods. Most of these monsters lack some facial feature or have an overabundance of them. A small group wearing copper helmets suggests a small internal organization within the larger anarchic mass, their militant attire suggestive of plunder. The most devolved forms are at the level of the forest floor, comprising reptilian, amphibious forms and insect-like monsters with their humanoid legs reversed to suggest insect-like hopping abilities, their froggy tongues giving them greater reach. Though composed in shades of gray, this painting really shimmers, teaming with movement and life, of a sort.
