Usually I’m drawn to painting a person because of something that particular person has done or said. However, my admiration for a little ‘ole Oklahoma band and their lyric, “they all want to be Hank Williams, but they don’t want to have to die” is the driving force behind this piece. For years I have absently doodled this phrase over and over and over. You can chronologize my artistic path by when and where I’ve doodled this. It has, in many ways become my anthem. My go to prayer on those days when I’m tired or doubting myself. When the voices in my head start to drown out the dreams in my heart. When I’m exhausted and wondering if all this hard work is worth it. For most, this will be a painting of Hank Williams, but as the artist, what it represents is so much more. Those dreams we have locked deep inside of us, that we can’t stop thinking about it, like an itch that won’t go away…the thing that we can’t be whole until we pursue. That thing that you’re willing to show up every.single.fucking.day. and work at it no matter the outcome. That thing you continue to pursue despite…fill in the blank. For me, it was always be a creative pursuit. What are you willing to die for? [Metaphorically of course.]

Historians use the art of written words to tell stories of the past. Artists use physical art itself. As someone who struggles to articulate words, I use art to tell stories and observations of icons, both past and present, and their profound impact on history and culture. How their words, songs, movies, poems, and quotes speak to the plight of human existence. Often mistaken for screen prints, the portraits themselves, always shown in black and white, are hand painted using acrylic. Each background varies between two studies of the icon. One look focuses on the color aura of the icon using a palette knife technique. The other is a mixed media patchwork study, telling stories about the icon, their journey, and legacy.
