Nagy Geza has a unique perspective on the world. One of the rare artists to paint the nothing rather than the something, his haunting and beautiful paintings focus on empty spaces, and in particular the way that they are transformed by light. Geza began his career at the prestigious NEMO studio of fine arts in Hungary, before undertaking a series of lengthy field trips to learn from master artists in cities such as London. He returned to structured studies in 1993, when he joined the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, where he was to stay – and thrive – for five years. Throughout this time Geza was involved in exhibitions across Hungary, both as part of a group and as sole artist, and has gone on to become a staple of the Eastern European contemporary arts scene. Exhibition highlights include Danube Palace (1997), the "Genezis" Festival of Contemporary Arts Budapest (2000) and an acclaimed series of solo shows at the Artus Gallery in Budapest (2001-2013), of which he is a prominent member. Eastern European art critics have consistently praised Geza’s solid yet ethereal paintings, which use broad brushstrokes to highlight the subtle interplay of architecture and atmosphere. The artist works in an old, deserted factory, and it is his great skill that transforms the landscape from desolate to enchanting. The mesmerising colours and shapes in his work challenge how we view derelict and uninhabited spaces, and are compelling when displayed in any space. Gezas' paintings can optically expand the space and the room they are in. It works well in living rooms, bedrooms and office rooms.
