About The Artwork
I love the alpine gardens of Tasmania, where spiky shrubs hardy enough to survive biting winds and winter snows thrive among the boulders. In places the stark white remains of pencil pines burnt fifty years ago describe extravagant shapes against the dark greens and red-browns, and it is easy to anthropomorphise them. So I did, and thought I captured the chill winds of approaching winter rather well. It's meant to be a playful picture, but when I exhibited it earlier this year it seemed to upset people. Guess the humour got a bit too black in this one.

I live in Tasmania, which is about as far away as you can get from everywhere else, and spend as much time as possible in the wilderness - primeval forests are good for the soul. Landscape here is old and weathered and rugged with plenty of rocky mountains and mysterious valleys. Both the scenery and history get described as gothic quite regularly, so that's what I paint. Tasmanian Gothic.
