Hours of the Dead Painting

The evening rush hour along the Hudson River in early winter presents a bestiary of migrating geese and idling cars and evokes an oncoming herd of ghostly riders on oxen. The title of this painting is derived from the medieval breviary cycle, which was presented in abbreviated from in illuminated books of hours. These books comprised a traditional structure which included the Office of the Dead for vespers, the recitation at dusk. The illuminations for the Office of the Dead traditionally contained memento mori which are here juxtaposed with a traffic jam. This painting is part of the "Urban Myths" series of landscapes or interiors juxtaposed with images to evoke a narrative.
