Continuing my exploration into natural pigments and the theme of liminality – in my case I am exploring the threshold between raw earth pigments and commercially produced art materials. For this piece, I used finely processed earth pigments from Cornwall and Devon such as Fremington Grey (350 million years old). I also used Trevellas Green, Leswidden White which are raw pigments I pounded with a hammer and ground into a fine powder. In addition, I used natural pigment pastels by Florence Paintmakers in the UK, as well as Sennelier Soft Pastels; Liquitex inks and I also did a Shellac burn. . The piece was produced on Fabriano Unica 50% cotton 250gsm white paper.

Working with natural minerals (rocks) to create paint is a slow process, it can’t be pushed out in a few seconds. It takes time to pound the stone, sieve it, blend it even finer using a glass muller and medium/water. Some processes require you to place pigment into water and skim it off the surface, allowing that resultant ‘skim’ to dry before grinding it again in the pestle and mortar until it is so fine, you could use it as eye makeup. Whilst I am making the pigment that will eventually be turned into paint, I am drawn into its qualities. It is this reflection that I find so fascinating about using natural earth pigments, which are taken from rocks that are millions of years old.
