About The Artwork

The Dutch artist Catharina de Rijke has been reflecting on Japanese culture for many years - her painting, her techniques, literature and philosophy. Catharina de Rijke says that her painted landscapes are also bodies, her painted bodies are also landscapes. The physicality is particularly evident on the surfaces of the paintings, which are often created haptically - whether by applying and scraping acrylic paint onto canvas and canvas or by incorporating pigments and chalk. In the painterly process, the structures grow into their own physical existence. Sometimes it is the materiality of the paint that brings back the physical: shiny lacquer-like pearls create an additional depth effect that holds the composition together in a deliberate moment - an aesthetic of disappearance.

The Dutch painter Catharina de Rijke lives in the Rhineland and works in Cologne, Leverkusen, Berlin and Brussels. She studied design in Delft and art history in Paris, graduating in 1981. Of course, the painter who was born on the coast loves the sea and the vastness of space, and many of her paintings revolve around the relationship between water and land. Light plays an important role in your work. Here, too, your pictures are site- and moment-related reflections on reality. Her landscapes also have a poetic character due to the unusual application of paint, and their balance of stillness and movement invites inner contemplation. Her works are represented in the Schirmer collection, Museum Jülich, as well as in private collections in Belgium, Germany, France, Kuwait, the Netherlands and the USA.
