Istanbul or Constantinople? (Painted 2003) Painting

This work was inspired by a visit to Istanbul with my in 2003. I initially planned to paint it tonally, thinking of Picasso’s paintings of Horta de Ebro but I had recently seen an exhibition of both Picasso and Matisse’s work in Paris and Matisse’s use of colour matched many of those found in Istanbul itself. There were patterns of colour across the city, almost like a Persian carpet or a mosaic.
