About The Artwork

Jack Pumpkinhead is a portrait of a, little known, but well loved character incorporated in the fantasy stories of L. Frank Baum, set amid the wonderful land of Oz. Every year I try to paint, at least, one portrait that captures the character and personality of one of L. Frank Baum's reoccurring main characters and 'Jack'--as I call it for short--was the character for 2018. I was waxing nostalgic for the days of old when, in my childhood, at around the age of six or seven, my parents took me and my siblings to a pumpkin field; where we scurried around like gluttonous little termites in search of biggest pumpkins we could find. I remember the vast blue of the sky, and the electric--sizzling orange of the pumpkins and how they smelled of freshly dug dirt and crisp oak leaves. I have no idea what day it was or what exact month, I don't even know the name of the pumpkin patch, except that it must have been somewhere near Kansas City. The one indelible mark left on my recollections was that I--the third baby to be born to my parents--found the biggest pumpkin that day. I chased days scheduled for fine, sunny weather on an online forecast for weeks before Kansas City finally got the golden rays it was promised, in order to get the exact blue I was craving for my painting's backdrop. The day couldn't have been better, there was barely a cloud in the sky. For the pumpkin I needed a spot on reference source, but it wasn't to be found amongst the cheep squash sold in those--always half waterlogged--Wal Mart cardboard boxes, instead, I got my boyfriend to pull over off highway 435 where we bought pumpkin huge enough to fit on my boyfriends head, and luscious enough to mimic the gold of or star's rays in its sunspot. I had spent all of three years trying to decide on a pose and setting for this character, going through sketches and digital paintings galore, before, I finally found my inspiration that would spark my epiphany amid a sea of random Google images, a photo of a giant pumpkin being hoisted into the air by a crane--blazing orange against a crisp blue sky.
