Jo Thorne is a British contemporary artist, trained at University of Hertfordshire and now based in Bristol. Strongly influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Expressionist Art, her paintings are described as evocative visual stories and explore the human condition and the built environment and its connection with nature. "I use colour, texture and composition to provoke an emotional response in the viewer. Some of my works retain elements of representation, others move entirely away as I take a totally spontaneous approach to painting. For me the process of painting is as important as the finished piece. I often use landscape compositions as a starting point and during the process I strive for the painting to take its own course, embracing unconscious mark making, adding colour and line as I work in order to intensify the atmosphere. I hope to leave the viewer pondering about the story behind the painting."
