About The Artwork

Judith Beheading Holofernes is a painting of the biblical episode by Caravaggio, painted in c. 1598–1599 or 1602, in which the widow Judith stayed with the Assyrian general Holofernes in his tent after a banquet then decapitated him after he passed out drunk. My painting depicts only Judith's disturbed face while performing the violent act, the moment of greatest dramatic impact: the moment of decapitation itself. Judith is set out in a shallow stage, theatrically lit from the side, isolated against the inky black background. I painted it in the traditional style, after Caravaggio. First layer is a grey undertone painting (grisaille), second layer are several instances of glazing with the respective colours.
