About The Artwork

In 1532 Correggio, now at the end of his career, dedicated himself to offer a sample of his mastery by painting "Jupiter and Io", perhaps his last work. This sensual painting is inspired by the story of Io, priestess of Hera, narrated in Ovid's Metamorphoses: Jupiter, in love with Io but fearful of the jealousy of his wife Hera, hid in a thick fog or dark cloud, and seduced the charming priestess. Correggio shows us the moment of abandonment of the nymph to the passionate grip of Jupiter. Precisely this scene was functional to the creation of one of the most virtuosic representations of the sixteenth century: the soft and ethereal cloud, the true signature style of Correggio's research, into which Jupiter had changed to seduce the beautiful Io. Representing clouds and rain was considered one of the most sought-after difficulties in painting. Correggio went even further by representing an evanescent cloud in which the face and hands of Jupiter can be glimpsed. My copy is slightly smaller than the original but with the same aspect ratio. In order to make it, I painted a gray underpainting (grisaille technique) which I tinted with glazes. In doing so, I tried to respect Correggio's signs and brushstrokes as much as possible, seeking maximum fidelity, even in the most confused areas such as the clouds, or in representing the leaves and twigs in shadow below the figure of Io. This painting is done on top quality Belgian linen canvas. The sides are white, and since it has a thicker canvas frame (3,5 cm), it can also be hung without any additional frame. Certificate of authenticity included.

Enrico Giulia (1983) was born in Rome - Italy, where he still lives, and received his education across Italy, the Netherlands and Japan. His keen humanistic interests led him to obtain a PhD in Cultures of Africa and Asia (2013) while focusing on philosophy and religions. These are reflected in his aesthetic and poetic research in painting. Said research is for him an instrument of exploration and representation of what escapes univocal verbal definitions, such as the unfathomable character of being, and of the qualities of the sacred. Deeply fascinated by the Symbolist movement of painting, Enrico is currently focusing on creating images from personal visions and inner imagery. In order to do this, he draws inspiration from natural places and often starts his new paintings en plein air, surrounded by unspoiled nature, and finishes them in the studio . His subject matter mainly revolves around the themes of the unfathomable and the indecipherable in the individual and in nature, and in the relationship between the two. Enrico is an enthusiastic supporter of the recent revival of traditional painting techniques. Embracing this, he constantly studies, reproduces and draws inspiration from the great oil Masters in art history: from Raphael, Leonardo and Titian, to Rembrandt, Corot and Waterhouse. A lover of gentle lines and harmony in shapes and colours, he considers himself to be an aesthete, and is always looking to create shapes and compositions that please the eye and invite the mind to explore and wander.
