About The Artwork

These originally started off as a set of circular watercolor paintings. I knew that they would become the base of a series of works but I wasn't sure what at the time. Then I had this urge to add black to it. Originally I thought 2B graphite but I didn't like the shine - I wanted it to be a very dark opaque black with no shine. I also wanted the ink to be meaningful and placed on the paper with conviction. So I went with sumi ink. After I laid the sumi ink down I felt like the pieces needed a little bit of static or an organic presence which is where the lines created with ball point pen came in. Then to give the pieces a little depth, I added the construction paper and lastly to tie everything together I added a cloud of pastel - a short breath to represent the entirety of the moment. Kanji means a "Chinese character" as well as "feeling" in Japanese.
