About The Artwork

This is a mixed media painting inspired by a book of photographs from satellite images. I was fascinated by the scenery and the fact that the location of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden contained tremendous amounts of salt in the waters. This washed up on the sand and combined with the rocks to create different shapes and objects scattered on the beach. I used a mixture of sand, shells, cement, vinyl, wood shavings, and pebbles to create the background. When the mixture dried, I completed the scene with acrylic paint.

As an avid do-it-yourselfer - I grew up in a family of renovators and learned from an early age how to plaster, paint, do construction and use various hand and power tools for many tasks. My early interest in drawing and painting also incorporated the skills I had learned throughout my life and I evolved into a mixed-media artist. The idea that found objects could be added to oil and acrylic paintings has been a major theme of my work. Often, those objects are the basis for the work and lead to their eventual conclusion.
