Many times travel and navigation have been used as a metaphor for life, so much so that the expression navigatio vitae often resonated in the Latin world. Travel is the fundamental element of human experience, and several are the aspects by which life has often been interpreted as travel/navigation: it is so in its journey from the moment of birth to the moment of death, but it is also so in the process of maturation, in entering within oneself to find oneself differently each time. Several moreover are the constituent elements of a journey that in a metaphorical sense find their counterpart in living. One of these is darkness. Darkness is the unknown toward which one moves, darkness, however, are also the moments of difficulty, the problems one faces and the suffering one experiences. In the darkness, one seems to have no reference points, certainties and securities seem to fail, one feels vulnerable and powerless. High then is the risk of becoming overwhelmed by anxiety, becoming prey to anguish and fear, and bursting into tears. Just as, however, the lights of dawn sweep away the shadows of night, so hope cleaves and dispels the shadows of the human soul, strengthens the troubled heart and heals its wounds. Hope illuminates the horizon, makes the goal visible and invigorates the human spirit.
