“Turtle” Statement Bags. An environmental and political art work for every day use. 50 children were inspired by Mrs. Simpson Worboys to create their own original cloth “Turtle” Statement bag. To help keep the 7 species of endangered Sea Turtles in the worlds oceans. The children and Mrs. Simpson Worboys are helping to reduce the amount of plastic going into the sea by reusing their “Turtle” statement cloth bags, rather than a plastic bag. Facts: The children learnt that only 9% of plastic is recycled world wide (United Nation figures) and 13 million tons of plastic is thrown into the sea every year. If Cotton material ends up in the sea it is destroyed by salty sea water within 3 weeks (Dorée). A plastic bag degrading in the sea takes time and it leaves behind man made micro plastic particles which are capable of causing harm to human and marine life. When a plastic bag floats in the sea water it looks like a jelly fish, the turtle mistake the plastic bag for a jelly fish and eats it. This can cause the turtle to starve and die. We need to phase plastic out of our lives and this is one way we The Young Artist Group are helping to do this. The bag bears an enviromental message. Every time a “Turtle” bag takes an outing, the environmental and political message will be advertised in the community. The Turtle bags are precious - much better than a commercial plastic bag! Something to consider if you ever buy a designer “Statement” bag, go for one that is made from natural materials. Avoid plastic handles and bags made with plastic materials, if there is no demand for them, they will stop being produced. Avoid buying Tortoiseshell (The Turtle’s shell). At this point we are trying to avoid exacerbating the plastic problem. Mrs. Simpson Worboys is now working on a series of “Turtle” Statement bag designs, the bags are made to order works of art. 10% of the profit will go to The Atoll Marine Centre, which is a turtle rehabilitation centre in the Maldives. Contact Mrs. Simpson Worboys at thewhiteartstudio@gmail.com for more information and to purchase a bag.
