About The Artwork

A few years ago, I decided to test myself by attempting a large painting of the view of the village through my studio window. There were lots of practical things that needed sorting out. Firstly the size. I had to think about portability and handling. (Getting tie work in and out of rooms and up and down stairs). I decided that a triptych would be the best format. However this decision created, in turn, its own problems. For example, when I stand at the window and look straight ahead, I have a view over the village houses to the Marie (or town hall). If I look left, I see across the medieval roofs to the twelfth century church of St Jean-Baptiste which dominates the village. Turning to the right, I look down the Rue du Pont which leads to the area set aside for the lepers in the middle ages. So, the task that I'd set myself, therefore, was to marry these three perspectives in a landscape format. It took quite a while, and there was a time when I thought I'd bitten of more than I could chew. However, I was very pleased with the result. Here it is, on three panels each measuring 80 cms wide by 122 cms high. This makes the overall width 240 cms when the three panels are side by side.

Bonjour. I'm Ray Johnstone, and I live in a small medieval village in south west France. I spend most of my time painting, writing and teaching art, but I still find time to play petanque most afternoons (the game they play with iron balls all over France). I firmly believe that everyone - yes, everyone - can learn to paint and draw, and I teach children and adults, as well as individuals, families and groups. (For more information about art holidays, simply cut and paste the following: ’Ray Johnstone France’). If you’d like a quote on any painting you might like to think about commissioning me to do, please email me the details. (Please keep in mind that I can paint almost any subject FROM A PHOTOGRAPH). I’ll get back to you right away.
