Marmot Painting

I don’t know what it is about animals holding something with their tiny paws, but that’s what inspired this marmot portrait. Because of the clear adorableness factor here, I wanted to attempt a more dramatic portrait to give the painting a bit more balance. So I used some deep, inky, almost black purples and darker violets to contrast its bright golden fur in the late day sun. Speaking of the fur…this particular marmot has both a greyish taupe and creamy yellow coat. Which made for some really beautiful (but challenging) shadows and highlights. The challenge was not so much in the color per se, but the temperature of the color. The actual fur pattern bounced from cool to warm back to cool as it wrapped around his body. And the color temperature of that fur, depending on whether it was cast in shadow or sun, kept changing as well. So some of the dramatic effect I was going for was already built into the color labyrinthine of his coat. Purple and gold also just happen to be colors associated with royalty. while this wasn’t intentional on my part at first, it ended up being another fun, more subliminal element of nobleness layered into depicting a more “common” animal.
