About The Artwork
This work is a depiction of Mars and Venus, the Gods of War and Love. Venus is traditionally associated with a shell. Most famously she appeared in Botticelli’s Birth if Venus coming out of the Sea on top of a shell. Here the Shell is a woven Shell Oil logo affixed to the canvas. This work was influenced by Japanese Shunga, Picasso Francis Bacon and Vincent Van Goghs work. It alludes to the second gulf war in Iraq
