‘Meditation in Green Hues’ was the first painting to be showcased in a group art show. It was at the Irish Arts Center in New York, the show was called ‘Signature of Thought.’ The year was 2013 and the show was curated by my watercolor professor at Hunter College Colette Murphy. It was in her class during an experiment that I discovered this signature stroke which became a part of my work ever since. She simply asked us to play with the tools we had to see what kind of markings they could make and I ultimately stumbled upon this line work and couldn't stop painting lines. Playing with new tools - brushes, paints, pencils has remained a part of my practice whenever I get new art supplies. I never know what interesting mark making I might discover. I am grateful for having the chance to be her student. She had a curiosity about the work of her students and that in turn helped me to be curious about what I was painting, to approach it and see it from a new perspective. ‘Meditation in Green Hues’ is one of the original paintings of this line work. Throughout the past decade, the line has morphed and grown and mingled with other strokes to produce a series of paintings on the variation of this theme. I call this collection ‘Tangled.’

Born in Yerevan, Armenia, Shushanik Karapetyan is a New York based artist. Her work has been showcased at the National Association of Women Artists, Governors Island, BRIC, La Bodega Gallery, LIC Arts Open, Site: Brooklyn Gallery, and Art Mums United. Shushanik's paintings are informed by her work as a gestalt psychotherapist, placing significance on the present moment, being attuned to both internal processes and external influences as she works on a piece. While paintings begin with some form of structure (i.e. a seascape or a landscape), this structure is tentative and flexible and is often guided by moment-to-moment decisions, whether it’s the choice of brush, color, texture, or movement in the painting. There is often a repetitive piece to her work such as pointillist strokes with a filbert brush or sweeping long strokes with a flat brush. She is inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, often communicating femininity, sensuality and organic motifs, as well as impressionist artists like Georges Seurat and Claude Monet, tapping into the ability of the human eye to blend points of colors on their own.
