This is my all time favorite oil painting. Being a self taught painter I struggled a lot, in the beginning, to capture reality and imagination. But this canvas baby, somehow, magically all came together.

It's from a cold, grey and drizzly visit to Paris (in February). I didn't see a single ugly view anywhere (except inside my hostel). Every street, every building, everywhere I looked was a potential painting. Waiting in the Saint-Michel subway station, I knew I wanted to paint what I was seeing. Something about the way the people were lined up along the platform---some tired after a days work, some maybe on their way to enjoy an evening out, some sitting, some conversing, some all alone---just struck me as a really great composition. So, I quickly snapped a photo before the oncoming train blocked my view.

The photo, taken with an old fashioned film camera, came out, thank god. But I simplified and changed a few things in order to create the painting I saw in my head: the people spread out along the platform like musical notes and everything flowing into each other as in the impressionist paintings from the Musee D'Orsay which were all still fresh in mind. It is a moment of peace, a transition period between one part of the day and the next, a moment of relief and anticipation.
