About The Artwork

This is the first of a series of portraits of african american "soul" singers from Georgia. I am starting right here in Atlanta with Gladys Knight. Ray Charles, James Brown, Little Richard, and Otis Redding will follow. Now if you don't understand the title of the painting, you are either under 30 years old or have been living on a deserted island. I also have a larger version of Gladys on Artfinder. Midnight Train is a one of a kind, original work of art. It is produced using India ink and acrylic paint on 5 mil archival grade mylar. The mylar does not have to be stretched like canvas or watercolor paper. It is easy to mount on any type of board: plywood, masonite, foamboard, etc. I include simple mounting instructions with each piece that I sell. You can see these instructions at the “me at work” section of my shop. I include a hanging strip and a drywall hanging device. Everything that you need to mount your painting except the board. For this work, I obtained a copy of "Midnight Train to Georgia", had it blown up and laminated to the mylar. The portrait of Gladys was then painted over the sheet music. The painting is signed on the front and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.

I am an architect by education, and profession. I have practiced architecture for over three decades. A good deal of my experience as an artist developed from doing architectural plans and illustrations. In addition to my architectural work, I have always enjoyed producing works of "visual art". It has provided a wonderful counterpoint to the precise work involved in architectural drawings: the highly precise vs. the "free and spontaneous". I still work with the same media that I have used in architectural work: India ink, graphite pencil and acrylic paint on archival quality mylar film. I like for my work to show either emotion or action.... Occasionally both. Emotion is usually captured in a close-up portrait or perhaps full figure drawings. Action is depicted in dance or sporting events. Other than that, I don't have any deep philosophical ideas about my art except that I want to produce works that people will enjoy and be proud to have hanging on their walls.
