"Searching the Mysterious Side of the Landscape" In the woods, I found a small stream of water. After walking around it and seeing it from all angles I detected a rock whose shape loosely resembles a horse's head. The idea of a horse drinking water was immediately discarded. However, a horse dying from thirst led by a friendly spirit to a well of flowing water sounds better. I definitely did not want to do a realistic image, but rather a softer one with spiritual qualities. I decided to do a monotone painting in blue with accents of color. The texture of the horse's head and the larger rock are similar while the water shows a continuous flowing movement. A bond between the spirit and the horse is shown by the water opening its mouth for water just as the horse does. Ministering Spirits is an example of my view on reality found at jameserice.com

Searching the Mysterious Side of the Landscape Retired on Long Island so there is more time for artwork, walking some, running some, and exploring a love of nature. God and family are there too. Currently, my artwork involves the use of colored pencils on quality paper. The theme is Searching the Mysterious Side of the Landscape. I use landscape imagery as a means to search for the unseen. Perhaps to uncover a mystery, to show a struggle, or to creatively suggest that there is more going on than we can see. Most of us are confronted with notions of something more than ourselves present in our environment. Forces are at work. Is evil real? I question if the human heart has really changed that much over time. Evil can be tempting. But, there is something holding evil back or all would be evil and I could not recognize it. The something must be greater than evil. But this will change too. Can one imagine the freedom to be had from experiencing the idea that there is no thought of evil from anyone, any institution, anywhere in the world? The struggle against evil actions such as killing, hurting, hatred, slavery, stealing, and others, will no longer be active and can finally find rest.
