About The Artwork

This painting is inspired by Francisco de Zurbaran's "Christ on the Cross". The top of the painting depicts an inverted triangle symbolic of Cosmic Intelligence descending on the individual who seeks divine knowledge, once the seeker is initiated into rituals of psychic purification. The triangle has a red rose in it with an eye. The rose is symbolic of Divine and unconditional love, and the eye is the Eye of Providence. The Christ on crucifix is in a blue body and has a gold skull. The blue body is symbolic of Avatar, the incarnation of a Hindu God (here Vishnu or Krishna, the Sustainer God of Unconditional Love) and the gold skull is symbolic of an enlightened mind that is silent and still (a.k.a dead) through meditation. The two hands are attached to squares, as square is symbolic of divine will manifest on the material dimension, and we usually use our hands to manifest on the material plane. The private parts are covered with a horizontal rectangle, symbolic of material existence, earthly desires, and procreation. The legs are rested on an upward triangle, as the feet are the foundation on which the human temple is built, and the body is supported by them. So, the movement here is from the ground up. The black background is symbolic of Space, the void, and the unknown, whereas through crucifixion the figure becomes enlightened and the unknown is revealed.

I find the visionary works of classical masters of the Renaissance and Baroque Era as major influences for my artistic style, mannerism, and subject matter. I am constantly fascinated by the use of coded language and symbolism in art and painting to communicate complicated concepts, ideologies, emotions, and mythology (Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Tibetan, Hindu). I believe that the divine speaks to us in metaphors, and as such, find refuge in expressing my understanding and experiences of the divine through symbolism. Although the subject matter of my works does not abide by reality and the laws of physics, my style in rendering is nevertheless grounded in realistic figuration, much like the surrealists and visionary artists of the past. I initiate my artistic endeavors with an instinctive urge to express intricate spiritual subjects with their underlying concepts and emotions according to my perception and understanding of reality, and layer my work with realistic depictions of the protagonists and the surreal mythical atmosphere to render it more comprehensible. I do not restrict my palette to a specific range of colors, as life is limitless, and art is an immaculate reflection of life through an individualized lens. My works are evidences of cathartic experimentation. I specifically enjoy ornamental symbols and patterns introduced in the works of the great masters, and as such, have discovered an interesting use of the 7th letter of the Armenian alphabet “Է” in my works.
