About The Artwork

My wife Sue and I take a walk virtually every day, no matter the season. It's primarily for exercise, yet it's also a great opportunity to check in after our day of work: to share what we experienced, to reconnect, to discuss important issues or not. These days, our impending move to Rockport is always in there somewhere. Of course, I'm always on the lookout for something caught by the light in a way that speaks to me. We've walked in all kinds of weather, and in a variety of neighborhoods. Most of the time we walk in daylight; in the winter, and occasionally in the warmer weather, we'll walk in the dark. In low light, there's intrigue, mystery, curiosity, and heightened interest in what's around us. We see our neighborhoods—and now and then our neighbors—in new ways, having just a glimpse into their unique, artificially lit, private worlds. This painting, "Moon Walk," is an effort to express what just such a tour around the streets we live feels like. To me, moonlight adds even more drama and makes for a greater sense of adventure. It's hard to say no to that.

born: 1958 Troy NY, USA David Arsenault was first captivated by art in 1970 when he discovered a reproduction of Edward Hopper's painting "Gas" in a grade school library book. However, it wasn't until the early 1990s--more than twenty years later--that a professor in his graphic arts program reintroduced him to Hopper's work and he decided to study painting. The early influence had it's effect on him to the degree that The Wall Street Journal wrote that "Some of Mr. Arsenault's paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper." He studied painting at the University at Albany (NY). Since 1993 when he first began showing, David has had or participated in well over one hundred fifty local, regional, and national exhibitions. He has shown in New York, Chicago, on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, throughout upstate New York, and now in Rockport, Massachusetts at his gallery, The Art of David Arsenault. His oil paintings, giclee prints, and reproductions are found in private and corporate collections around the world. Arsenault became a juried member of the Rockport Art Association in 2015. He and his wife relocated to the seaside town of Rockport, Massachusetts in November of 2014; in March of 2015 they opened The Art of David Arsenault Gallery; now in it's seventh year of existence, it resides at 8 Dock Square in the historic downtown Cultural District. His work is best known for large shapes, dramatic lighting, and strong color, which creates a compelling sense of mood, time, and place. Each piece presents a quiet exploration of everyday life. Arsenault strives to describe instants of shared human experience by expressing the transformational qualities of light, a sense of deeply personal encounters, and the elusive moment frozen in time.
