NOT ENOUGH LEFT Painting

Although the initial starting point for this work was a twisted fence in front of an abandoned derelict building, it served to anchor my thoughts about loss. At first I was intending to reference the world of conflict and destruction by having things ‘caught on the fence’ like a scrap of clothing but I quickly found this too literal/banal and the painting began to change as I thought about more abstract considerations of witnesses, of windows, our eyes on the world. Tower-like structures, precariously thin and insubstantial, are now there in the finished painting where once were railings. The presence of ‘windows’ in one form or another are in most of my work however and have preoccupied my thinking for decades; in particular how we only see small portions of reality at any one time - we look in a biologically selective way even when outside but also through actual windows, screens etc.The camera lens is a prime example of our visual selectivity. We edit and select. This is also true of memory. We cannot visit the same scene from our past without loss or embellishment.
