About The Artwork

The name of the project refers to the famous painting by Rembrandt, which depicts a volunteer group of townspeople - fusiliers. Unlike the regular army, the Dutch Fusiliers were the result of civil self-organization - they are conscious, free people who voluntarily gathered to defend their state, cities and public order, providing themselves with weapons and ammunition. Just as consciously and voluntarily, motivated by a common noble purpose, they submit to a common discipline and subordination, which fundamentally distinguishes them both from the regular armies of the time and from robber bands motivated by fear or the pursuit of booty. The ability to purposefully delegate part of their individual freedom for a common goal, to take responsibility for the risk of life, makes these people truly free. It is safe to say that this painting is the most vivid expression of the modern idea of civil liberty. Nine years ago, the world changed drastically when international security systems began to crumble after the annexation of Crimea. Like many, I experienced a powerful shock - aggressive practices that seemed to have sunk forever into historical oblivion, returned to consumption. The "end of history" turned out to be just an illusion. In the same way, it turned out that neither the country's independence nor democratic civil liberties are some kind of inseparable given. Our world is fragile.

I guard the borders of the civilized mind. Really. I do. I serve in the Lithuanian National Defense Volunteer Force, and frequently I’m sent to patrol our national borders. Exhausting missions can push one’s consciousness to visions of the other side, the upside down, the void. My art can be entered, like Dracula’s castle, from outside the ordered realm, where apocalypse becomes the norm. The visitor will be welcomed into my own vision of weird-realism, where you should expect the black swan and assume that a serial killer lurks under the clown’s grin. What you will see, when liberated from the chains of the conceivable, will reveal the inconceivable horror. It’s that that I guard against.
