About The Artwork

Medium: Mixed media on linen canvasYear Created: 2007. I was very interested in Berkeley's New Theory of Vision and the interconnectedness between sight and touch while at University. I also found evidence of this interconnectedness reflected in the work of Michelangelo, Picasso (synthetic cubism) and Matisse. Michelangelo famously remarked "Good painting is the kind that looks like sculpture". I cannot agree with this statement without qualification but it does appeal to me. I have always aspired to produce paintings with the gravity of sculpture. Sculpture appeals to our sense of touch, not just our eyes. Rembrandt's "The Jewish Bride" with its variegated textures also seemed to me to expound the interconnectedness of sight, touch and experience. Our reality is a synthesis of perceptual information derived from various different sources, sight, touch, memory and experience. The style of this work was shaped by these ideas and Istanbul itself. The butterflies are a traditional symbol for the mind/soul. For me Istanbul represents a transformative human aspiration for permanence. Just as Yeats described wanting to transform himself from the mortal tatters of a human body into a golden bird and sit upon a bough to sing to Lords and Ladies of Byzantium, the buildings aspire to permanence. In reality, the buildings only offer temporary shelter. In time, they too will crumble.
