About The Artwork

Italian for “open work”. Refers to the concept of an art work or work of literature being purposely designed to be interpreted in different ways. The artist has an intent, but allows a great deal of ambiguity for the viewer to explore. In this case, a woman rises to the surface in a vast body of water. While the situation may appear to be a crisis, she plays a role in an art work, like an actor in a movie. In dreams, being immersed in water symbolizes for the dreamer being immersed in deeply-felt emotion. Her body is in the water, her head and rational self is above in the clear air. But how to separate the two? - it is the constant struggle of artists (and all people, really). Below, a small inset picture, an open door leads to new experience. Thinking about this painting will hopefully lead the viewer to new and personal interpretations, and bring about thoughts about one’s own experiences. How to balance the sensual life of the body, and the rational life that is necessary for everyday living?

Peter ILLIG is known for his complex paintings that walk a line between post-modern semiotics and traditional illustration. Involved in Denver's art scene, producing thought-provoking oil paintings composed of layered images mixing color with black-and-white. Dubbed by the press as a "neo-pop surrealist," and "one of Denver's best artists." Peter Illig's works are analogies for human emotions and experiences, American psychological landscapes reflecting how we think of several things at once. He layers images borrowed from film, TV, cyberspace, and his own experience like a coded language of symbols to express his ideas and feelings. This search through the stuff of the world, matter and flesh, is inherently erotic. And so is the act of drawing and painting. These meanings and objects intersect and overlap in life, and in Illig's art. Where does one object end and another begin? Where does one idea end and another begin to form? Can theory become visual? These and other questions are presented in Illig's work. Peterillig.com
