I prefer painting from life, either models in the studio, or landscapes, outdoors. The tension of having a real subject in front of me, combined with the endless possibilities it suggests provide me with an inspiration no other process can. When painting in the landscape it is important to me that I acknowledge the changes in my motif over the course of making the painting. Absolute reproduction is not a possibility. Painting does not capture the frozen moments of photography. One’s point of view changes as one moves about in front of the easel. The patterns of light shift with the sun. The paint itself has it’s own physical qualities. All of these factors impact the painting process in a positive way. The richness of painting is determined by all these factors, and how open the artist is to incorporating them into the work. My Autumnal paintings are small in scale. They are paintings I could complete in one session, as the next time I came back, the scene would have changed enough to warrant a new painting. Autumn is particularly challenging in this regard, the leaves are falling as one paints. The scene can change dramatically in just a few hours. One reproduces an experience, rather than a scene. Thickly painted, heavy brushstrokes, nice drips and splatters, painted plein air.

ALL ARTWORK READY TO HANG. I have painted since childhood, when I did not know what an artist was. Even now I am still defining myself as an artist. I have lived in Chicago, DC, New York and Maine, and currently live and work in Boston. I paint from life, in the landscape, before a still life or with a model. The paint is important. I want it evident in the work, not polished over. Brushstrokes and drips tell the story of the making. My work is about looking, not seeing. Looking is making choices, being deliberate. I want to compel you to look at my paintings, not merely to see them. I paint what it is like to look, not what a thing looks like.
