Our Lady of the Flowers - Notre Dame des Fleurs Painting

Jean Genet's subjects, and the way he wrote, complemented my interested in rough lives. I was already reading about sex workers in New York and LA, how life turned them to a dangerous life, a struggle of survival. One doesn't have to be a thief or a criminal to write about these people but Genet was one of them, probably that's why he wrote with the passion. The chicken and the egg dilemma: was he passioned about thieves or was he talented first? I chose to paint this young man in saturated colors, with a pink polo, a troubled face, a neck collar, and a rose. You don't need to be a thief or a criminal to read about them and see the humanity between the cracks of a solid wall. Oil on wood.
