My recent subject on my painting is mainly concerned to the word “ambiguity”.
We may assume the expressions such as expeditiousness, simplicity or obviousness represent the characteristics of contemporary art. On the contrary to this, I’m rather a interruptor to the viewers of my work than a kind helper, not to just scan and define my painting with ease. For example, one of my recent painting series “Passing through a peach garden, I found a waterfall splashing down yellow droplets” is obviously inspired from 15th century’s landscape painting by Ahn Gyun(painter in Joseon Dynasty). But I wouldn’t define the series as “landscape painting” nor “traditional asian painting”
The irregular type of shapes and effects by the scattered, thrown powder of pigment on wet paints... the nature of water running through the shapes made by pigments and sprayed water...
brush strokes or painting actions trample on it intended or unintended...
All through this process deployed on canvas, I enjoy making ambiguous space which could be thought as “metaphoric”, has repeated expressions of unrecognizable shapes and also could hardly be understood. And therefore, I expect the viewers to experience some “unexpected meditation” I didn’t even imagine by looking through the painting actions done on canvas.
2016, Mar.

My recent painting starts from the self-questioning of "What is painting?" "What is the nature of painting activities?" I'm trying to seek the answer of the question, excluding the narration or the form of painting. Then, minimizing the expressions to using simple and mere actions of painting
on the surface. And I hope the viewers would find the joy and delight from the basic and raw emotions.

Korean Painter, Sculptor Born in 1962, Studied at Hong Ik University majoring in Painting(BFA) Lives and works in Paju,South Korea. - "All the ideas for this 'Paddling' Series come from playing in the water or paddling on the water. Your thought on where the brushstrokes begins and ends just make sense in that point. Because when you paddle on the water, the act of paddling appears on the water and then disappears. In that sense, it's meaningless to find where it starts and ends and even meaningless to distinguish 'drawing' action from 'erasing' action on water. That's how I drew the concept of 'drawing on water', so to speak, onto the canvas in this series" - 2020, Yoon Joo
