About The Artwork

My most recent series, Pattern in the Forest, is an exploration of place through process. After taking a long hiatus from oil painting, creating a system to follow was a way for me to take the anxiety out of producing a "good" painting and instead focus on the joy of mark making and the things I love about the medium-- like rich vibrant colors and the ability to retain texture. This is a three-phase process. During phase on I create a plein air oil pastel/gouache/watercolor of a place... in this case a watercolor I had done while traveling around Bangalore, India. During phase two I create a fabric and paper “collage” of the plein air piece. What you're seeing here is phase three..an oil painting that uses the collage as a guide. Each stage in this process builds on the last, creating pieces that become increasingly more detailed and ultimately incorporate imagery that doesn’t exist in the original place and yet expresses it perfectly. The orginal watercolor for this piece was created on site in a park outside Bangalore during sunset. I was sitting watching all the colors and shadows in the forest change and trying to capture it with paint. It was that magical moment when the light makes everything glow.

Anastasia Zielinski (b. 1983 Washington D.C.) is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus in oil painting, mixed-media collage, and installation art. Bright and bold with an emphasis on texture, her art is a celebration of the natural world and the benefits gained from time spent in nature. Anastasia’s multi-layered work is characterized by an abundance of visual information that verges on excess yet is appropriate to the subject. She credits the memory of her mother’s overflowing sewing cabinet for the reoccurring and expansive use of fabric and sewing notions within her work, both as material and inspiration for mark-making. With a BFA from Pratt Institute (2005 Brooklyn, NY) Anastasia’s foundation in traditional oil painting has informed how she approaches other mediums. Ms. Zielinski has shown her work nationally and internationally and has created site-specific installations for INSCAPE arts, Shunpike’s Storefront Seattle, Spaceworks Tacoma, and CLAVO. She currently splits her time between Mexico City and the Pacific Northwest.
