About The Artwork

Harvest moon 2007, Brighton, England, seafront. A cloudy night on the September full moon. I went out to take photos of the moon rise, and didn't really get what what I wanted because of the clouds. But on the way back, I noticed the Peace Statue on the seafront was framed by beautiful clouds lit up by the blue light of the moon, and the reddish orange of the street lights. I took some photos and only now am interpreting them through painting. I'm painting these quite loosely, letting my memory and impressions of the clouds take by brush where it will, inspired by my sense of the goddess that night. The clouds take various forms, a hare leaping over the moon, kindness, birth and laughter. Its a struggle when these forms start to emerge, if I try to develop a form its loses its mystery, so I have to practice detachment and let the paint go where it will. I love this painting, its on show at IO Gallery in Brighton at the moment. I use acrylic and oil for painting. I chose acrylic for these Peace Statue and moon paintings because it dries quite instantly, allowing me to quickly apply layers in an impressionist or even quite an expressionist style - responding intuitively to the image in front of me.

I use creativity to explore my identity, to interpret and meditate on mind, body, nature, the world. I paint and draw and write and sometimes combine all three in digital mediums. Some of my recent work reflects the social and political reality. I've been drawing from life in pastels, pencils and charcoal since my teens. I've been painting since 2007, and have been involved in artists groups in Manchester, Zimbabwe and Brighton. I'm a Dad and I live in Brighton. My parents were both artists.
