Picasso in Watercolor: A Portrait on Book Paper Painting

As the artist, Brenden Sanborn, I created a unique watercolor portrait of the legendary artist, Pablo Picasso. This painting was part of a prestigious exhibition at the Portland Museum of Art in Maine, where I was chosen among 1000s of artists to participate. My admiration for Picasso inspired me to create this piece on physical book pages, which were glued to a wooden milk carton. The painting was left outside in the harsh Maine winter, which gave it a beautiful wear and tear look. The watercolor effect adds transparency, allowing the beautiful words of the book to shine through. In my art, I love to leave big portions of my canvas "unfinished," allowing the viewer to use their imagination and build their own story. The use of gesture lines on paper and splashes of watercolor brings the male figure to life, adding a unique touch to the piece. Although the original photo reference of Picasso was in black and white, I added my own coloring ideas to capture his essence. This special painting has been part of my studio for almost a decade, and I still admire it every day. "Picasso's Essence: A Watercolor Portrait on Glued Pages" and "Box Cities Artist's Tribute to Pablo Picasso in Watercolor" are two poetic titles that describe this one-of-a-kind painting. This piece captures the admiration I have for the great artist, and I hope it brings joy and inspiration to its new owner.
