About The Artwork

Water is the most important resource on our planet. It sustains us physically and its fluid movements soothe our minds. Water has many complex qualities – from its ability to erode granite to our reliance upon it to softly clean our skin. It can be bent with static electricity, while also being famous for its own refractive properties. Water can either satiate or inundate our thirsty croplands, indiscriminately dismantling our future or reaffirming the confidence we have in our mastery over nature. Pond’s Edge began on the shores of Crescent Lake when Beard was in transition to fatherhood. It has developed into a reflex upon the limits he found, and continues to find, with human will. As its name suggests, Pond’s Edge is a quiet search for a more passive balance with natural forces and formally focused upon the interaction of surface and depth, plant-life and cast shadows, color and light. Drawn to the visual, ecological and political labyrinth of the Floridian waterscape, Beard’s inspiration for these works comes not from unspoiled wilderness but from brief moments of beauty in urban retention ponds and modified natural spaces like Sawgrass Lake Park. He references photos taken on walks with his family and the series helps to hone the drawing and observational skills he needs for his entire body of work.

Nathan Beard employs a variety of processes to achieve complex, multi-layered artworks inspired by the human conception and experience of Space-Time. The meaning of his work is inextricably tied to the process of its creation, with each color, form and technique chosen for its metaphorical possibilities. He draws inspiration from the density and variety of Floridian flora, the natural and cosmological sciences, as well as mathematics and anthropology. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Colorado State University in 2001, Nathan worked in galleries and as an Art Consultant in Denver, CO for seven years. He grew up on a dairy farm in western New York. Prior to his university studies, Nathan lived in Egypt for one year as an exchange student and, upon his return, worked as a cowboy in Wyoming for two years. Nathan currently maintains a studio in St. Petersburg, FL, where he lives with his wife and eight year old daughter. Nathan also serves as Assistant Curator at Dunedin Fine Art Center, and as Independent Curator of his own traveling group exhibition called CONSTRUCT. Beard has exhibited extensively since 2013, including Tampa Museum of Art, JADA Art Fair (Miami), Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan), Dunedin Fine Art Center, Hillsborough Community College, Morean Arts Center, and Highlands Museum of the Arts; and in 2019, at Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, Leslie Curran Gallery, Gaze Modern, Olivet Nazarene University, and Brooker Creek Preserve. His work in is in a number of private and corporate collections, including B2 Communications, MHK, Penny Hoarder, Osprey Properties and Tampa Bay Title. In January 2020, several of Beard’s large, multi-panel paintings were selected to serve in the Arts in Embassies program and will be on view at the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador until 2023.
