About The Artwork

In this oil and acrylic large-size portrait painting, the abstract background translates the fiery emotions of a dilemma, to stay or to leave, to trust or to turn away, in which the female figure struggles to find herself and moves towards a colorful road ahead. The combination of two mediums absorbs the conflict, whereby the refined sheen of the oil for the portrait stands out against the background of dull and dry acrylic paint. The background expresses the inner turmoil in front of a split in the road that beautiful and idealized facial features cannot betray. This painting, made during a time of dilemma and decision, expresses from the depths of me what I was as yet not fully aware of going on inside of me. The portrait revealed a pre-conscious truth that many of us have known and must overcome before a decision is made. The background is a perspective of a road ahead in deep colors of orange, green, and purple, black.

After a fashion design career in New York City, I now paint realistic floral watercolors, and realistic portraits in watercolors, pastels, oil on canvas and digitally tinted portraits. What motivates me to paint Native Americans in this new watercolor collection is the beauty of the true personality and character of a magnificent race of ancient people issuing from pre-history and call doing them justice an awesome honor. In my watercolor flower paintings, I am inspired by the exact luscious realism of Dutch Baroque Flower painting traditions that consoled me throughout my lonely years in boarding school, from which I drew solace in experiencing botanic beauty, elegance, luscious generosity, color, and frivolity, in short, in all things that are out of the realm of a strict upbringing. They still provide glorious satisfaction, even if my standards for classical realism still drive me.
