"Power Lines", 16 x 20", acrylic on canvas As I worked on this painting this past week, a theme of #compassion seemed to present itself to me wherever it could. The first instance was when I applied for a grant to do a mural for Inspiration Pollination (fingers crossed). One of the requirements for the grant was that the project somehow reflect compassion, which I think is amazing. This got me wondering if it's possible to integrate compassion into everything that we do. Of course, I doubt one can have compassion without empathy. And I think it's hard to truly to empathize with others' experiences without having gone through something similar yourself, or without having a vivid imagination. Either way, these words continuously ran through my thoughts. The trunk of this beautiful tree I found in my neighborhood was wrapped in solid vines that looked like they were part of the tree. The total effect was that the tree appeared as if it was being supported by the vines. At first I was annoyed that my shot included the power & cable lines in the background. However, it made me look at the tree vines differently. Those were actually the power lines I was interested in, the lines that were coming together to form a powerful supporting structure. How can we be power lines to others? How can we come together to be a support network for friends, family, neighbors, acquaintances, strangers, animals -- who may be hurting, mistreated, disenfranchised, struggling, discriminated against, ill, unemployed or homeless? Not only have I wished for myself and others to have more compassion this past week, but I've also witnessed it in several places. I've seen friends coming together to help friends in need of support, I've received generous encouragement from acquaintances, I've seen passionate volunteers pour their efforts into helping animals, I've witnessed someone truly give selflessly, and I've heard about other countries taking in as many refugees as they could. I encourage you to use your imagination and really t h i n k about what others' experiences are like. I know I'm going to try harder to. Every time I have, it's yielded positive results that I never could have imagined. #powerlines #melanieoliva #conservationart
