About The Artwork
Prism is an original oil on canvas, painted on high quality Jacksons deep-edge canvas and is ready to hang. I used a model in a vibrant red dress and used a murky green pool on a very hot day to get the research shots I needed to make this painting. The light and resulting contrast of colours make for a luminous, otherworldly glow and the painting is bold and intense. This painting is from my ongoing series of the figure underwater, and is one of very few where I have used the figure fully clothed. The diaphanous nature of the dress increases the sense of weightlessness as she travels through the water. I've painted it with fairly large brushstrokes and there is a looseness about the handling of the paint, although it looks to be more intricately painted from a distance. The paint is quite thick especially in the upper half where the surface reflection is.

Through drawing and painting, Patsy McArthur deals with various themes in her work but in many of the images, there is a common feeling of strength and liberation. She often strives to make images that convey a sense of power and energy or potential energy. Patsy McArthur was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1976 and studied at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen, winning the Royal Scottish Academy John Kinross Travel Scholarship on graduation. Since then she has lived and worked in Florence and Barcelona where she completed a Masters Degree in European Fine Art in 2001. She has exhibited widely throughout the UK and internationally, and in recent years has had solo shows in London and Geneva as well as participated in art fairs throughout the US and Asia.
