About The Artwork

The Purbecks Hills and seascape are among the most renowned in the South of England. They form part of the Jurassic Coast. Old Harry Rocks, looking at it from Studland Bay is so iconic that thousands of people visit the site in all seasons. It looks and hangs majestically on the Azure waters Swanage and Studland, and looks almost like a sculpture in the waters. I have painted Old Harry Rocks in all weathers, and this is one of those times where a storm had just passed over and the skies were ready to open again, making for a very dramatic painting. Both the sky and the sea were very animated as I sketched and took photos of it to use later for this quite large painting. I painted it in Acrylic as I thought it brings out the urgency and drama of the day, hoping the viewer will also feel the power in all of it.

I was born in Malta into a family of jewellery makers. My early inspiration came via watching my two cousins paint in oils, and although I work mainly in Acrylics and Watercolours... the smell of turps still does something to my artistic senses! After spending more than 20 years in England as a professional artist, I was given the chance to produce and present my own art shows on Malta television... which I really love. My favorite is MALTA ON CANVAS where i go around the island and paint 'en plein air' much like the Impressionists loved doing. Recently I started to challenge myself to producing Abstract paintings but in line with my more traditional work. I feel that an artist should always strive to 'evolve' his work and challenge his mind and eyes1 www.johndimech.com Having now returned to the UK(2015) I am developing new ideas in my more modern modern paintings hoping to be inspired by more Abstract-expressionism art, but wanting the viewer to see images that one can readily recognize and respond to.
