Sometimes crying is good cause it helps cleaning your heart... and joy can shine again there. In February 2019, the mother of a friend from my childhood died from a cancer. She was from Marseille. Around two weeks before - I did not know she was about to die because it all arrived very quick - an old song came to my mind "Il pleut sur Marseille, le temps rajeunit / It is raining on Marseille, the sky is getting younger", and I started to paint this piece. It is dedicated to her and her daughters and husband, and anyone who lost someome especially from cancer. The palmtree and its reflexion represents her cancer of lung she suffered from. On the other hand it also represents the sorrows I felt, with the rain washing my heart. The cold colors represent the deep sadness ones can feel right after a loss. The shape of the head is inspired by Matisse'work. Their is also hope in this piece, and even serenity. Like the person who died made it through winter and can relax in peace in a nice place. The turqueese water expresses freedom, the freedom the soul of someone sick finds after death. For this piece I used various technics such as glazing and underpainting for the blue part and the pool. I played with the transparency of the colors to give a spiritual and light feeling to the viewer.
