About The Artwork

This artwork was a part of the MAG Montreux Biennale 2023. This artwork is the 2nd part of the triptych "Roman Heritage" of a big series of artworks dedicated to the history of Switzerland. Here is a fragment of a real document - the Claudian Table - a record of a speech delivered in 48 by the Roman Emperor Claudius before the Roman Senate. From this speech, 2 fragments have been preserved, discovered in the Lyon district of Croix-Rousse in 1528. The table is a bronze sheet weighing 222.5 kg, measuring 193 cm in height, 139 cm in width, and 8 cm in thickness. Now it is part of the Lyon Museum of Gallo-Roman Civilization collection. The Gauls, which included the Celtic tribes that inhabited Switzerland BC, even after acquiring Roman citizenship, found themselves in a disadvantaged position, in particular, did not have the right to civil and military service (ius honorum). Jerome Carcopino believes that the council of representatives of Gaul met in Lugdunum on August 1, 48, after which its deputies were sent to Rome. Claudius, being himself a native of Lugdunum, supported the admission of the Gauls to the cursus honorum and granted them the right to be elected to the Senate — first for the Aedui, and then for all the other peoples of Gaul. The Claudian Table is not just an artifact and cultural heritage of Switzerland but as historical evidence of an important turning point in the country's formation. Artists uses only handmade acrylic colors in her paintings.
