Saint George/Agios Georgios Painting

This is an image rewritten from an existing icon that is kept in the museum of Byzantine culture of Thessaloniki. According to sister Wendy Beckett “Icons do not appeal to the imagination, they appeal to the spirit. They are there for prayer. A true icon is as functional as a pen or a bicycle,…, it only works when put to personal use. Looking at these icons all will feel encouraged to spend time in silence, looking and receiving the blessing of a mysterious but Real Presence”. The force of this Real Presence (spiritual presence) depends upon vigour of line and brilliance of colours (red, blue). All fundamentals of the Byzantine art are respected, the golden background to make the icon seem like suspended, the vivid colours and the severity of the face. Saint George is often represented with a horse and a lance. He was a soldier of the roman army and has wounded seriously a dragon that was threatening the inhabitants of Silene in Minor Asia.
