About The Artwork

Scuola was built by the brotherhood of St. Mark in 1260. Inside housed a hospital, an orphanage and educational facilities. However, in 1485 it was destroyed by a great fire, and over the next twenty years it was rebuilt under the direction of Pietro Lombardo with savings collected by members of the fraternity. The facade was completed by Mauro Coducci. The last rays of the sun illuminate the tops of the building, turning them into gold. Claude Monet depicted a similar plot in one of the artworks in series dedicated to the Rouen Cathedral.
