This painting is about bearing witness to the the quiet growing and the presence of movement that happens regardless there being an observer. In a way, the passage of time is never, and can never be empty, however stagnant we may feel. I'm thinking of the quiet way that nature moves through winter, with all the energy happening behind the scenes - soil fertilizing seeds, roots replenishing organisms ahead of a new season of growth. What can look bleak and neglected is actually humming with determination that cares not for our projected interpretation or analysis. There is great comfort in noticing that despite our best and most fleshed out fears, ultimately we are leaves on a stream. Surrendering to that clutching, dominating drive to 'understand and make better' also enables us to be carried as elements among a system far greater than we can apprehend.

I am a process-driven painter, meaning that the creation of the artwork is entirely dependent on the moment that I share with the paints. I engage with the materials and the surface as if they are alive and we co-create the painting based on this real-time relationship. There is an element of laying down my ambition for the final image and instead entering a collaborative state where I can discern the direction of the composition and be led to create a painting that accurately embodies the time it was painted in. I work in oils, unusually on oil paper and all of my work is abstract. I work full time from my studio in Hove, UK and exhibit a few times a year in both solo and group exhibitions. You can read more about my artistic process on my blog.
