About The Artwork

My paintings live at the intersection of two basic themes: mindfulness (or quiet contemplation) and a connection with nature. The paintings are meditations on the role natural silence plays in personal well-being and the unfortunate prevalence of nature deficit disorder. Over many weeks/months, I build up color and surface texture on the canvas using small amounts of acrylic paint with thinning agents, retarder, gloss, matte, and other acrylic media. For me, painting is a form of meditation in itself. I lose myself in its physical action -- applying each layer of color becomes a rhythmic dance that lasts sometimes more than an hour. When I can no longer push around the paint, I sit with each layer for days, weeks, or sometimes even years.
