About The Artwork

This piece, for me, is an exploration of creative expression within the perimeters of imposed restraint. Although influenced by many Suprematist/Constructivist works, I imposed upon myself the limits of using only curved and straight lines and a heavily restricted pallet. The results, I hope, will inspire us to exist within self or externally imposed boundaries, yet still strive to achieve, and maintain, a firm sense of individuality. The artwork itself is completed on a gesso primed calico canvas securely hand mounted to MDF board. It is painted in a complimentary range of muted, yet vibrant, earthy colours and is protected by an acrylic gloss varnish. It is executed to a high artistic standard as can be seen in the ‘close up’ and ‘detail’ pictures. This painting is sold unframed and signed on the back.

Originally from Leeds, Peter now lives in the Yorkshire city of Hull with his wife and family. Despite having no formal technical training Peter has a degree in Arts and Humanities, taken as a part-time mature student at Hull University. Peter has drawn constantly throughout his life and has familiarised himself with many different materials and techniques. He currently favours graphite and acrylic paint. Chiefly inspired by artists such as Lowry, Peter is also influenced by elements of Picasso, Matisse and Klee. Whilst his work relies on a high level of stylised draughtsmanship, his lack of formal art training and the warm depiction of his urban/industrial everyday surroundings place him firmly as a contemporary naive artist. Peter has been selling works through various galleries since 2004 With work in collections across Europe, Australia, Canada, USA, South Africa and the Far East. His work has been exhibited in the Ferens Gallery, Hull, and he has made several appearances on BBC television.
