Because this owl's left eye is slightly pinched, and comparatively more brow-'shaded', he exhibits somewhat of a stubborn-quirky character, defiantly checking out his original onlooker (me), and now the viewer (you). Contemplating, or so it seems easy to project at least: you think you know better, huh? Wasn't I supposed to be the wise one... (who is, after all, the owl here...) In terms of it's genealogical belonging, the family name of the southern white-faced owl (Ptilopsis granti) is Strigidea, whose natural habitat consists mainly of savannahs and dry woodlands stretching out as far and wide as Gabon, Kenya, Namibia, and South Africa. Some of it's favourite prey are large invertebrates, as well as a certain small mammals, birds and reptiles. I saw this particular owl at the zoo in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The painting comes without a frame. I always paint the sides of the work, so that the scene carries over to the edges. This way there is the option of not framing. I also wire my paintings. Thus, the work is totally finished and ready to hang.

1964, Schiedam,The Netherlands, Clara Bastian. After attending the art academy (ABK Rotterdam) Clara Bastian (1964) obtained a foundational course in biology, a study that met her fascination for anatomy. Her oeuvre consists of commission portraits as well as free work. Her free work does not only show her mastery of the trade, but above all her original view of reality. The intriguing portraits of animals and people that Clara Bastian makes are painted with great skill. With the reproduction of texture, light and shadows her work seems almost more realistic than a photograph… http://www.dutchcows.com http://www.clarabastian.com
