This, the seventh in my take on Stations of the Cross, depicts Christ as a hard-livin' rockstar-barfly-type of character. The inspiration for this image was the late Lemmy - frontman of rock band Motorhead. Recently I watched a documentary film of his life and was impressed by his commitment to the music he made and to the life he had chosen (even though it eventually killed him). I also had the sense that, despite his rough exterior and brusque manner, he was a sensitive man who, during the course of the interviews, came across as very principled, honest, and almost gentlemanly (if you ignore the affairs he had had with the wives of his own band members and that of their manager!). I saw him as a model for a very human Christ. In my painting I wanted this apparent paradox of sensitivity and roughness to come through. He smokes and drinks, picks up women - consumes life with a voracious appetite - but still holds onto vestiges of his past: his mother (as depicted by the 'Mother' tattoo) and his crucifix - the latter now shrunken and small, but still in evidence. I wanted him to be seen as a strong and sensitive man, but flawed and with deep spiritual needs. He barely notices it, but the crown of thorns dangles from his hair unheeded - as a remainder from (and a reminder of) an earlier time in his life - a time when he was consumed by suffering. (Once completed, this series will be for sale).

"Although I state that much of my work stems from the imagery thrown up by depression, I would say that it is also the imagery of unconscious connection.Indeed the two are irrevocably entwined. It is no accident that the appearance of animal symbols and the use of bodily products such as hair, urine and blood is also influenced by my former work as a veterinary surgeon. Some time spent in psychoanalysis has helped me to illuminate these connections to find a personal mythology, which I believe connects to a universal meaning of what it is to be human. The `otherness` of animals, their power, vulnerability, unselfconsciousness and instinctual drives, and their relationship with us, are potent symbols of qualities we also have - qualities which we struggle with in our attempts to remain in control of ourselves and our society. It is where these tensions meet that my work is situated." Studio: Sculpture Shed, Spike Island, 133, Cumberland Road, Bristol, BS1 6UX. Tel: (0117) 929 2266; Email: michael.hayter@blueyonder.co.uk
